Do You Have Hard Water Stains on Your Windows?

Rainwater is hardly ever just water. Calcium, magnesium and other compounds are typically dissolved in the droplets that shower your home during a rainy day. These minerals make up what is known as hard water. If you’ve ever had a professional do gutter cleaning on your home before, then you’ll know how damaging these minerals can be on copper or aluminum surfaces. For glass, however, it’s a slightly different story.

Read on as our professional cleaners at Sunco Window Cleaning LLC show you a few effective tips to keep your windows free of these hard water mineral deposits so you can keep them looking brand new much longer.

Hard Water and Windows

The sun’s intense heat is enough to evaporate small amounts of water but most minerals require much higher temperatures. When the rainwater on your windows dries up, the calcium, magnesium and other salts are left behind, creating a whitish film deposit on your glazing. Early signs of hard water staining can be difficult to spot, but as they accumulate over time, they become more pronounced until large sections of your panes are covered in limescale that needs professional window cleaning to fully address.

How to Remedy Hard Water Stains

Calcium deposits are soluble in weak acids such as vinegar. Soak a towel in a 50-50 solution of vinegar and water and place this towel over the affected area for about a minute or two. Afterward, wipe away the window surface until all traces are gone.

Professional Cleaning

Unfortunately, this DIY solution is not as effective for major stains. If more than a third of your windows are covered in hard water deposits, it’s more advisable to have a professional handle the problem. These spots can be tough to remove without some advanced cleaning solutions and tools.
